And if I may say something about English - I was amazed by the enormous amount
of terms used to describe different sea regions. We have almost zero analogues
in Russian - the British were in fact great sailors:
Trade Winds
Roaring Forties
Furious Fifties
Screaming Sixties
Horse Latitudes
Doldrums
Westerlies
etc.
Or the classical:
The sun is over the yardarm.
My favorite ;)
Nothing even close exists in the Russian language.
Intersting observation. I have heard many of those English terms, but only know what some of them mean. Others I am not so sure about. ;)
